  Amiga Unix — 68040 · 68060 - Year of the Amiga Unix Desktop 2026
  Author: sokero, isoriano1968 & jusii.   Verified: Sep 18, 2026   id: 6058
Amiga Unix — Amix — was Commodore's System V Release 4 for the Amiga: shipped in 1990–92 for the A2500UX and A3000UX, then left where it stood. amigaux.org is an unofficial community project that picks it up again: Amix on 68040 and 68060 machines and on today's accelerator hardware, with a modern toolchain, a package manager, and drivers for cards that never had any. The work is done in the open, and written down as it happens in the grimoire.

amix-kerntools — the Amiga UNIX kernel build hub
Author: jusii   Verified: Sep 17, 2026   id: 6061
Amix is Commodore's port of AT&T System V Release 4 (SVR4.0) UNIX to the 68030 Amiga (the A3000UX and A4000). amix-kerntools is the build hub for a family of MIT-licensed device drivers for it: it owns how an Amix kernel is built. It discovers driver repos by their driver.conf, generates the SCSI controller-selector wiring, applies each driver's kernel patches, links the kernel, and runs a clean-gate that defeats an intermittent emulator linker-corruption bug. It ships no driver source (those live in the sibling driver repos) and no Amix — you bring your own licensed Amix 2.1 install. See AGENTS.md for the driver-author contract and REPOS.md for the ecosystem map.

AROS, the FOSS recreation of AmigaOS, comes to Raspberry Pi
Author: Liam Proven   Verified: Sep 01, 2026   id: 5992
AROS is an all-FOSS re-implementation of AmigaOS, and after years of effort, it now supports Arm kit – both 32-bit and 64-bit Raspberry Pi hardware, especially the Pi 3. {...} Whether or not it has been made with LLM bot assistance, we think this is an impressive step forwards. AROS has been able to run on Arm CPUs for years, but until this, it ran hosted on top of another Arm OS – usually Linux. Now it can boot and run on bare metal.

Commodore 900: the UNIX workstation Commodore almost released
  Author:   Verified: Aug 02, 2026   id: 2241
For most people, Commodore means the C64, the Amiga, affordable home computing, excellent custom chips and the kind of power supply you still eye suspiciously before plugging in. But in the mid 1980s Commodore also had a very different machine on the bench: the Commodore 900, also known as the C900 or Z-Machine. It was not a games computer, not a colourful home machine, and not a direct follow-up to the C64. It was a business workstation built around the Zilog Z8001 processor and designed to run Coherent, a UNIX-like operating system. In another timeline, Commodore might have entered the workstation market before the Amiga became its next great identity. In our timeline, the Commodore 900 became one of the most fascinating almost-products in computer history.

Essential 68K Mac Software for Basilisk II
  Author:   Verified: Aug 09, 2026   id: 2376
Tragically, developers have stopped creating software that will run on a 68K Macintosh. But thankfully, old Mac aficionados have some options. What follows is a list of software that will run on your emulated Macintosh. I'm a big fan of System 7.5.5 (which is free), so I've only listed software that is compatible with it. These titles have all been tested to work in Basilisk II. And, of course, the software should work on a real 68K Mac.

  lxa (Lin)Amiga Emulation Layer
Author: gooofy (Guenter Bartsch)   Verified: Oct 03, 2026   id: 6081
lxa runs AmigaOS executables natively on Linux, similar to how WINE runs Windows programs. It combines a 68000 CPU emulator with AmigaOS library implementations, bridging system calls to Linux I/O and filesystem operations. The long-term goal is for lxa to become a viable development platform for Amiga software on Linux — enabling Amiga developers to write, test, and run productivity applications and IDEs directly on commodity hardware (Linux PC, Raspberry Pi) without needing real Amiga hardware. RTG (Retargetable Graphics) via Picasso96 is the primary display strategy, targeting full true-color screens at arbitrary resolutions.

SheetEater is a Power Macintosh emulator prepared especially for MorphOS. It lets you run classic PowerPC versions of Mac OS in a normal MorphOS window or on a separate screen. The program is based on the open-source macemu and SheepShaver projects, with a MorphOS-native interface and a PowerPC-focused execution core.

  Smells Like Transmeta
Author: David Penn   Archived: 2001-06-17   Verified: Jan 03, 2026   id: 6040
{{ARCHIVED}} Could a legendary computer and a rebellious OS shine a little light on the shadowy Transmeta? Out of the batcave called Transmeta, where wealthy playboys mix with programming superheroes, may come the final ingredients in the computer of the future: a networked unit geared for maximum multimedia performance, with a "next generation" superprocessor equipped with a software-programmable microchip. Would you expect anything less from Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft and major Transmeta Corporation investor; Linus Torvalds, "father of Linux" and Transmeta's most famous employee; and the never-say-die true believers at Amiga?

  vamos - virtual Amiga OS
  Author:   Verified: Oct 03, 2026   id: 6082
Introduction: The virtual AmigaOS runtime (aka Wine for Amiga :) vamos is a tool that allows to run AmigaOS m68k CLI binaries directly on your Mac or PC. It emulates the AmigaOS by providing implementations for some functions of the Exec and DOS library. It will run typical console binaries that do not rely on user interface (intuition) or graphics stuff. Its main focus is to run old compilers and assemblers to have some sort of "cross" compilers. This approach will not run any applications or games using direct hardware register access - for this use case a machine emulator like FS-UAE is the tool you will need... Remember, vamos is an API level emulator and never will be a full Amiga system emulator like WinUAE or FS-UAE!!

What happened to AmigaDE? Inside Amiga’s failed portable platform
  Author:   Verified: Aug 02, 2026   id: 2231
What happened to AmigaDE? Inside Amiga’s failed portable platform: The oddest Amiga ever launched was not a computer. It did not come in a case. {...} AmigaDE was something else. It was a software layer, a runtime, a business plan and a brand exercise rolled into one. Later pushed as Amiga Anywhere, it tried to take the Amiga name away from the idea of a specific computer and attach it to portable applications running across different devices. That made it one of the most revealing products in the long post-Commodore Amiga story. It showed a company trying to move the brand into the device era, but also showed how hard it is to make an old computer name mean something new when the machine itself has disappeared. The hook was brutal because it was true: the brand survived by leaving the machine behind.

Xrtg — X11R5 RTG Server for Amiga UNIX (AMIX)
Author: asokero Antti Sokero   Verified: Aug 05, 2026   id: 2340
Xrtg is an X11R5 server for Amiga UNIX (AMIX) SVR4 that drives the MNT VA2000 RTG graphics card directly — bypassing the native Amiga display chipset. This is my my very (un)reasonable vibe-coding adventure. The goal is to explore, and see how far the combination of old hardware, old Unix, modern AI tools can go.
