1980s computer controls GRPS heat and AC
  Author:   Verified: Nov 30, -0001   id: 3900
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A 30-year-old computer that has run day and night for decades is what controls the heat and air conditioning at 19 Grand Rapids Public Schools. The Commodore Amiga was new to GRPS in the early 1980s and it has been working tirelessly ever since. GRPS Maintenance Supervisor Tim Hopkins said that the computer was purchased with money from an energy bond in the 1980s. It replaced a computer that was “about the size of a refrigerator.” The computer is responsible for turning the heat and the air conditioners on and off for 19 school buildings.

  Author:   Verified: Nov 30, -0001   id: 4960
On June 14, 1984, Don Greenbaum, the Treasurer of Commodore International Limited, was at a secret meeting to negotiate the acquisition of Amiga Computer, Inc. This document was provided to Commodore by Amiga Computer, Inc to describe the Amiga computer. Don couldn't recall if the document was given to him at the June 14 meeting, or if he received it prior to the meeting. This document was generously contributed by Don Greenbaum.

25 years of Games That Weren’t
  Author:   Verified: Nov 30, -0001   id: 5005
Games That Weren’t has been running for a quarter of a century this year, which is not only staggering, but also a bit scary if I’m honest. For 25 years, we have been documenting and preserving as much unreleased software as we can for a variety of platforms. Though it all began with just the Commodore 64 at the start, the machine I grew up with and still play today.

29 years later, Settlers II finally gets Amiga release
  Author:   Verified: Nov 30, -0001   id: 5459
Perhaps one of the greatest strategy games of the 16-bit era, The Settlers, did not get a sequel on Amiga. So, when The Settlers II came out in 1996, only MS-DOS and Mac OS enjoyed it. Aside from a release for Nintendo Wii in 2007, it didn’t land on any other platforms. So, what about the Amiga? Well, amazing news has just dropped: The Settlers II Gold Edition (the 1997 edition) is coming to the Amiga in October 2025.

2MB RAM Expansion for the A570 CD-ROM Drive
  Author:   Verified: Nov 30, -0001   id: 3820
This is a simple 2MB RAM expansion as others have done for the A570. It is simply an implementation of the Commodore schematics. People have done these before but frustratingly I couldn't find any gerbers to make my own, hence this implementation.

30pin SIMM RAM expansion for the Amiga A500
  Author:   Verified: Nov 30, -0001   id: 5955
In preparation of receiving the first Amiga 500 for my retro-computer collection, which sadly didn't come with an A501 RAM expansion, I decided to make my own memory expansion board for it. Keeping with the "using whatever I happen to have in my hardware bin" theme, I decided to use 30pin SIMMs in this. I had to use at least two modules, since each SIMM is 8bit wide and we have a 16bit bus to populate.

  3x Kickstart in one EPROM
  Author:   Verified: Nov 30, -0001   id: 3609
Kickstart 1.3, 1.4alpha and 3.1 in one 1MB EPROM. Amiga ROM images prior to 2.0 are 256k (262144 Bytes) in size. The later versions are fitted into 512k ROMs. I was going to upgrade my (new) Amiga 500 to Kickstart 3.1 but wanted to retain the ability to switch to 1.3.

40 Years of Paula - The Amiga Sound Chip
  Author:   Verified: Nov 30, -0001   id: 5489
The Pioneering Invention that Changed Music Forever. It all started with a Bach Chorale. In 1985, computers with fairly sophisticated sound chips were available to the home user. The Commodore 64's SID chip squelched it's way into our hearts, and Yamaha's CX5M - replete with polyphonic 4OP FM synthesis, certainly raised a few eyebrows. Sampling, however, was another matter entirely. The older Micros could play a train of pulse clicks at lightning speed - the result? A sample that was fairly crusty (1-bit) and taxed the CPU considerably.

5 Practical Amiga Operating Systems That Are Valuable
  Author:   Verified: Nov 30, -0001   id: 4217
In my recent post about Amiga’s not being convoluted, incomprehensible, or frustrating here. I learned by posting on social media that there are people thinking that AmigaOS is just the basic releases that Commodore and ESCOM made. That scares me when they also use AmigaOS from time to time. It’s as if the operating system never improved. Well, they are not going to stop me, because there’s more than meets the eye.

64-bit Odyssey 2.0 and JavaScript story
  Author:   Verified: Nov 30, -0001   id: 4670
In this short article I’m going to show you different ways that upcoming 64-bit version Odyssey 2.0 can execute JavaScript code and performance implications of these choices. Some of the results are quite interesting, coming very close to modern-day (October 2024) Firefox performance. This is especially important taking into account that Odyssey 2.0 WebKit engine has been released in February 2019.
