Dale Luck from the original Amiga development team has preserved the very first Amiga prototype, which used three huge stacks of well-equipped breadboards instead of custom chips. The computer was on display in Germany for the first time last weekend at the Amiga 40 event. Amiga user ‘Pittrock’ took pictures of the exhibit and kindly gave us permission to publish them here. |

If you are a long-time reader of my blog, you probably know that I bought some pallets of retro hardware a few years ago. Only twenty Amiga 500s survived unrefurbished since then. (there is one more not visible in a pic). For the past few years, I’ve restored hundreds of retro machines to their original state (sometimes with minor mods) and I am kinda bored with it. Time to try something different. I’ve decided to create a fresh series of posts where I’ll try to describe upgrades and visual mods of the above A500s. Every A500 from the above stack will be unique and will be described in a separate blog post. Once such Amiga is finished and tested, I will create an eBay auction with it. This is post number 1 out of 20. Today, I will focus on the special unit – fourth from the top in the left column on the above pic. It is special because this is the one that brought the whole blog post series idea to life. Oh! This is going to be a long post ? |

A few months ago, I stumbled upon a cheap Amiga 500, and I couldn’t resist. I decided to restore it from the ground up and add a GottaGoFast RAM + IDE controller to finally build what would have been my dream machine in 1990: an Amiga running OS 1.3 with fast RAM! |

This is a non-functional prototype of the PIOS One personal computer, main board and single-processor CPU module. So back in 1995, I was brought in to Amiga Technologies to consult with their management on the future of Amiga. We agreed that it was possible to design a PowerPC-based Amiga of some sort, and to port the operating system to a HAL-based, CPU-independent code base. This was actually happening. And then ESCOM got into trouble by overextending themselves, and it ended. |

PiSCSI is a virtual SCSI device emulator that runs on a Raspberry Pi. It runs in userspace, and can emulate several SCSI devices at one time. There is a control interface to attach / detach drives during runtime, as well as insert and eject removable media. This project is aimed at users of vintage Macintosh and Atari computers and more (see compatibility list) from the 1980's and 1990's. |

The PiStorm its a Raspberry Pi based device which emulates the Motorola 68000 CPU found inside the Amiga, Atari ST, Mac Classic, etc. It consist on a board which internally replaces the Amiga 68000 CPU. On top of this board a Raspberry Pi 3A+ is connected through GPIO header. When paired with the Amiga, the PiStorm provides CPU accelleration, virtual hard disk (through disk images resident on the SD), WiFi, RTG graphics, 128Mb fast ram, RTC and other enhancements. The device is plug and play if you use the preconfigured SD image we provide. You will need some Linux command line experience to setup the WiFi. |

Recently, theres a new project, fully open source that really has taken the classic Amiga to the next level. No, I’m not talking about the Vampire. I talking about PiStorm. PiStorm is an amazingly inexpensive piece of hardware that will take your 68000 Amiga to the next level. |

The Amiga, well known as the best and greatest computer ever designed, is nonetheless a platform of yesteryear. Its 68K, and later PowerPC, architectures have both been abandoned by the mainstream, and its attractive grey industrial design no longer graces store shelves. That doesn’t mean the platform is dead however, with diehard shredders like [Claude Schwarz] working hard to keep it alive with projects like PiStorm. PiStorm is a Motorola 68K CPU emulator, running on a Raspberry PI 3A. The Pi uses its GPIOs to interact with a CPLD chip, which acts as the logic glue to allow the modern single board computer to emulate the Amiga’s original processor. However, it’s more than just an easy way to replace or upgrade a CPU. It also offers additional features, like retargetable graphics acceleration, SCSI disk emulation, and the ability to run whatever Kickstart ROM you so desire. |
