Developing software takes a lot of knowledge. The thirst for information is endless. In this post we will make our recommendations on what to read, and they can all be found online in pdf format.

Reconstructing the Leftovers on the Amiga Kickstart 1.0 Disk
  Author:   Verified: Nov 30, -0001   id: 3936
It is well-known that the “Kickstart” disk that came with the original Amiga 1000 in 1985 contained some fragments of source code: The floppy disk that was used as a master for duplication had been used by the developers before, and had not been erased completely. Nobody seemed to have looked too closely at what is on this disk – so I did, for this episode of Computer Archeology. The revealed data tells us about how the Amiga operating system was brought up, how it related to Tripos, and where it was developed.

Recreating Dune II for the Amiga
  Author:   Verified: Nov 30, -0001   id: 4724
We’ve spoken with ex-Westwood developer Bob Koon, who is working on a new Amiga version of Dune II. Bob Koon was part of the original Westwood team that created the groundbreaking real-time strategy game Dune II, which is considered the first «modern» game in the genre. His main task was converting the game to the Amiga. While the Amiga version was met with a very positive reception and is still fondly remembered today, Koon never felt completely satisfied with how it turned out. So now he’s set out to recreate it from scratch, and make the definitive version of Dune II in the process. We got in touch to ask him about the project.

Recreating The Amiga 1200 PCB From Pictures
  Author:   Verified: Nov 30, -0001   id: 3089
In the past we’ve talked about one of the major downsides of working with vintage computer hardware, which of course is the fact you’re working with vintage computer hardware. The reality is that these machines were never designed to be up and running 20, 30, or even 40-odd years after they were manufactured. Components degrade and fail, and eventually you’re going to need to either find some way to keep your favorite classic computer up and running or relegate it to becoming a display piece on the shelf. If you’re like [John Hertell], you take the former option. Knowing that many an Amiga 1200 has gone to that great retrocomputing museum in the sky due to corroded PCBs, he decided to recreate the design from scans of an unpopulated board. While he was at it, he tacked on a few modern fixes and enhancements, earning his new project the moniker: “Re-Amiga 1200”

Recreation of PicassoIV FlickerFixer attachment/snap-off pcb for cards missing it
  Author:   Verified: Nov 30, -0001   id: 2615
This is a recreation from original data of the small snap off PCB of the PicassoIV (PIV) Amiga RTG graphics card. I created this because often cards seem to be sold without this PCB and then the FlickerFixer/ScanDoubler of the card cannot be used. The design hasn't been proven yet but as said is created from the original schematics and PCB layout. This is a four layer PCB.

  Redit
  Author:   Verified: Nov 30, -0001   id: 3842
{German} Redit is a simple text editor for Amiga computer, which is particularly suitable for low-performance computers: Redit runs without restrictions on a minimally equipped amiga with Kickstart 1.2 and half a megabyte RAM. Of course, Redit can also be used on an amiga that was upgraded to the teeth as a slim and fast editor.

  Remembering the Amiga (25th Anniversary)
  Author:   Verified: Nov 30, -0001   id: 4829
A few weeks ago (July 24th to be exact) was the 25th anniversary of the Amiga. Although it wasn't my first computer, the Amiga 500 was probably the first computer I owned that felt special in some way. It was a hacker's computer, an audio/video entertainment box, a unique and colorful thing full of possibilities. The Amiga users I knew were different, too.

  Remus + RomSplit betas
  Author:   Verified: Nov 30, -0001   id: 4264
RomSplit rips ROM images apart into it`s component parts (plus 'AmigaOS ROMUpdate' files and Piru`s Exec44). Remus then takes any of these parts and builds them back into a ROM image. It can also use Blizkick modules and patches too for fixing known bugs etc. Actually, it can take any file in the standard amiga hunk format, as long as there`s at least 1 valid resident structure and no BSS hunks.

Repairing a cracked PCB in a Commodore 1901 monitor
  Author:   Verified: Nov 30, -0001   id: 3944
This is the second and final part in a very short series where I improve and repair my Commodore 1901 monitor. In part 1 I added a SCART connector with analog RGB and audio support, but also discovered that the colours were a bit off – especially when using an RGBi input, such as CGA – and discovered a crack on the PCB. In this part, I will repair the PCB and hopefully fix the colours.

  rePlayer (another multi-formats music player)
  Author:   Verified: Nov 30, -0001   id: 4693
With this piece of software, you can play a lot of oldschool music format from the old times, such as the Amiga (which was the original purpose of this player), Atari, C64, Nintendo, Sega... As a maniac collector, it started to get very annoyed to keep up to date with newer songs from an artist, check for songs duplicates, and also some missing playback functionalities. So I started to write my own player, first to play default modules from the amiga using ImGui (for the interface), OpenMPT (to play amiga modules) and libcurl (to handle the downloads from the websites).

  Rescued CDTV from the crusher
  Author:   Verified: Nov 30, -0001   id: 3626
A good find... It’s a chore to find yourself lugging junk down to the tip. But every now and then you happen across a diamond in the rough! Today was my day to score as I spotted a Commodore CDTV unit lurking in a dark corner of the electrical disposal area. She was looking poorly and in desperate need of rescue. Needless to say I took on the challenge, plucking her from the ruin (yoink!) and saving her from certain destruction. I am now the proud owner of a CDTV unit!
