So, what is it? Well, according to lore, the Amiga engineers at Commodore were very interested in the Unix operating system(s), and wanted to bring it to their own machines. Unfortunately, the Motorola 68000 CPU in the Amiga was deemed insufficient, as it lacked the sophisticated MMU required. This, in turn, led to the creation by Commodore of the Amiga A2630 CPU accelerator which contained a 68030 processor and mmu. And this, in turn, led to the creation of the Amiga 2500UX, which is basically an Amiga 2000 with the aforementioned A2630 card and an A2091 SCSI hard drive card with a hard drive containing AMIX. |

This year marks the 30th birthday of the Commodore Amiga, the revolutionary multi media computer released in july 1985. It was a true generational leap in computing, offering a fast CPU, great graphics and sound and a pre-emptive multitasking operating system. It could do things out of the box that many of its rivals struggled to do even years later. Time then to celebrate this amazing machine, which amongst much more important achievements, was the machine (in combination with the Commodore 64) that was largely responsible for my choice of career and all round passion for computers. Yes, without the Amiga I'd likely be doing very different things today! About the Commodore Amiga |

The original Amiga computers, OCS (Original Chip set) and ECS (Enhanced Chip set) used 4 bits per color channel (Red, Green and Blue), which meant that they could display a limited selection of colors (usually 16 or 32) from a total range of 4,096 colors. |

IN CLOSETS all over the country, they lurk ready to strike back. Behind old football trophies, under dirty washing, wedged between long-discarded hockey sticks and Thompson Twins vinyl albums, they wait. The Commodore Amiga is set for a revival if the diehard users who have kept the flame alight for the last few years have their way. The recent acquisition of the Amiga technology by Fortune 500 company Gateway2000 has made Amigans, long the outcasts of the computing world dare to hope. Hope that the system they have devoted so much time and energy to will be resurrected. |

David Ellis buys a Commodore Amiga and looks at the latest software written for it. The music is good, the graphics are better - but what does the future hold? Commodore's Amiga is now in the shops after months of speculation, procrastination, and hype. But what's the software situation like for the musically inclined Amiga user, and is the long-term future a rosy one? |

What is AMIX and the Amiga 3000UX? Commodore hoped to capture some of the UNIX market by bringing out their own version of UNIX that would run on their workstations. Commodore's management at the time was thinking ahead and wanting to look very professional on all the levels. Starting with the Amiga 2630 card (that came with the Amiga 2500 computer) Commodore put the ability to 'dual boot' between the AmigaOS and AMIX. This feature was continued with the Amiga 3000 series and featured in the Amiga 3000UX which was the spotlight for Commodore's UNIX push. |

I was at the Norwich Games Festival last week, along with six of Amigas and a BBC Master 128 with Valiant Turtle. Whilst I was there, OMTG Retro handed me his Amiga 1000 and asked if I could fix it for him, it wouldn’t boot. So, I had a look into it. |

On this day, 39 years ago, on July 23, 1985, Commodore introduced its Amiga 1000 computer. And let’s just say the world wasn’t ready for it yet. Dave Haynie, a Commodore engineer who worked on the later models, has said there was no such thing as a 1980s computer. There were 1970s computers and 1990s computers, and it was the Amiga that dragged the rest of the industry into the 1990s. |

The Amiga 1080 monitor was the original monitor Commodore supplied with the Amiga 1000 in 1985. It’s one of only two monitors that featured the Amiga branding with the Amiga checkmark logo. Its picture quality is very good, but the monitor sometimes behaves oddly. You can fix the odd behavior. I’ll tell you how, and I also tracked down the elusive pinout for this monitor. |

This is a custom 3D printable Amiga 1200 External USB Keyboard Mount which continues the aesthetics of the original Amiga 1200 case and it is designed to be installed without making any modifications (no holes need to be drilled) to the case. It is delivered as downloadable STL files along with some pictures. |

I am far from the first person to make a new A1200 LED board. As I built a ReAmiga 1.5 I needed an extra LED board. I could have bought one but making something like this was a pretty good way to end a day of meetings and boring maintenance programming. The original used a rectangular lens with a pair of LEDs at its base. I've seen a single LED illuminating a light pipe, also a line of rectangular LEDs with no light pipe. I decided to try 3D printed light pipes. |

These are various fixes for different versions of the Amiga 1200 (Escom and Commodore) that will make the Amiga work better with an accelerator card from brands like Apollo and ACA. Note that Blizzard cards, albeit very expensive, are known to work without requiring these fixes. |

I’ve been slowly but surely branching out into Amigas from Commodore’s 8-bit range of computers, and as such I recently got my hands on my first Commodore Amiga 1200. The A1200 is a 32-bit computer from the 1990s, and is effectively a more capable version of the A600, featuring a 14MHz 68020 CPU (as opposed to an 8MHz 68000), 2MB Chip RAM (as opposed to 1MB) and AGA graphics (as opposed to ECS graphics), and a full-sized keyboard – like the A600, it also features an onboard IDE and PCMCIA interface. |

This project is a re-implementation of the Amiga 1200 board started from the schematics. I made some changes and enhancements to the original schematics. |
